Status Quo

So, after my dad dragged all this photography equipment across a good two thousand miles in 2005, I'm finally in a situation to make use of it all, and its fantastic. The one thing I'm missing is a Norman power pack for the strobe. Finding an old one isn't as easy as I'd hoped, but I'm feeling out some new leads.

Its still super chilly out, but I'm hatching productive plans for spring like fixing up this old bike I found, building myself some furniture, and so on.

A few days ago marked the one year anniversary of my employment at Gannett. Many things have changed but it affords me lots of possibilities that I couldn't otherwise have pursued.

Volunteering

I've been volunteering at a local non-profit store that specializes in fair trade products from developing countries. They're really cool people and I get a chance to help out. The product photography setup I've come up with is very DIY, but I'm very happy with it and it's results.

I'm doing some more shots for them this week for some new thing they're doing. Some of the images are on thier website www.globalgiftsindy.com. I may help them with their website if I have time and they want the help...

Its Been A Long Time

So. It's been a while. A long while. The SGA website went well. Due to internal politics and management changes, the website never really got to live it's life, but it was a fun project and I'm glad I did it. The Stutz gallery showing went incredibly well. I sold two pieces that night and somewhat monopolized the scene by inviting most everyone I knew. It was a lot of fun and there was a lot of great work there from the students of Ivy Tech.

There have actually been more live changing events since the last post than most any other part of my life, but in an attempt to keep things business related, I'll keep it to the basics. I left the billboard printing company and began work at a company who owns newspapers. I tone the images that go into newspapers while I continue my personal ventures and finish school. I'll be transferring to IUPUI in the fall for web design and shooting weddings when friends need a photographer. It pays well, but it's also a lot of work. My girlfriend began volunteering at a local fair-trade store in town, so I've started to volunteer product and in-store photography for their newsletters, advertisements, and publications. It's a lot of fun helping out a non-profit taking such an interesting angle on helping developing countries.

Other more personal changes would include moving downtown, beginning to ride my bike everywhere, slowly being converted to a vegan lifestyle by my girlfriend, flipping a car at 80mph on highway 74, hosting shows in our apartment, and enjoying a life without soda or television.

Looking Projects Grizzly

Its a line from a song. Anyway, things are looking up. And by up, I mean busy. In addition to the regular projects, it was brought to my attention that the Ivy Tech Student Government Association needed a website and my design was chosen. While this provides little compensation besides a free class the semester after I graduate, they needed it, and they look so sad when no one volunteers. They wanted something simple, so I came up with something on Saturday.

The Rob Muller project will move forward next month and I've had several inquiries for web design. A good friend will be graduating with a photography degree soon and needs a website, but thats not until June. Also on the far horizon, not one but two friends are having weddings next year and I'm shooting the whole shebang. Which isn't my favorite activity, but they're good friends and yeah.

In much more recent news, Ivy Tech has acquired a bit of gallery space in the Pivot Gallery in the historic Stutz Building in downtown Indianapolis and held an open competition to all Visual Communications and Fine Arts students. There were over a hundred fifty entries and twenty nine were chosen for display from November 2nd to November 25th. I will be showing four pieces in that gallery and there will be an opening night reception on the second from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. I've had work make it into the final stages of contests, but never been in a gallery, so this is exciting.

Changes Changes

So, I left the portraiture studio and now work second shift pre-press at a billboard/banner printing company called Indy Imaging. It offers quite a bit of insight into the world of production and what one should and should not send to a printer. The schedule is incredibly flexible and it offers a great place to get my own work printed.

Real late one night I decided to snap some pictures in the pre-press room and use Photoshop's Photomerge to put them all together. Of course, it doesn't do a perfect job, but its pretty dang good for not having to do anything but pick the files. The key is to take a lot of pictures so it has the most to work with when piecing it all together. The downside of that being that the more pictures you use, the harder on the computer it is. My 2.0GHz AMD and 2GB of RAM took a few minutes to get it done.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the new and pulling in a few freelance jobs here and there. Mostly web design, but this fall I've been asked to do some engagement photos, senior photos, and next year I've got at least one wedding. So, it's going to be an interesting year combining that with taking a semester off between schools to work as much as possible.

If I keep up at this rate I'll be able to get that Nikon D80 I've had my eye on pretty soon; which would be amazing.

I went out to a class-mate's gallery opening on Mass. Ave last night and talked with some gallery owners. One of which is apparently moving down the street and might have some room to show my work. I guess he doesn't take a cut of the sale, he just charges for the wall space per month. So, theres that and apparently Ivy Tech has struck up a deal with the Stutz Gallery to get the students a month of gallery space and a special event; which will be exciting.

Things are well. The museum is moving along. Got some pictures from here and there to share. The studio is nice. No pictures from there though. I should have visitors tomorrow though! That'll help pass the time. So, museum. Making signs and whatnot for them. The people are all a lot of fun and I'm happy I'm not off getting people coffee and whatnot.

I thought they were just pulling my leg when they said people whistle in the morning. But how could you greet a polar bear in the morning and not smile??

I'll probably try to attend the job fair they're having soon. Good stuff, now time for bed.

Museum

The Children's Museum is amazing. I've only had two days there so far, but I think it'll be a wonderful experience. The general employees are always really happy, the intern coordinator is happy, and my 'mentor' is happy. Everyone is extremely upbeat and helpful. More pictures to come once I upload them.

Rob Muller

New project signed in. I met up with Rob Muller and he feels www.robertmuller.net needs an overhaul. Apparently hes had it since 2000 and would like to switch things up a bit and hopefully reorganize things to save money in the long run. Which is where I come in. He had some specifics in mind, so working from there I've got some ideas brewing over where to take it. Once I get some digital things put together I'll post.

Apparently I'll have an opportunity to sell some prints at a local festival type thing and Rob Muller wants a print of Midnight in Mason, so I've got to look into all of that...

Start er Up

Had my first day at the portraiture studio. With the internship starting on the 22nd, I've put in my two weeks notice at the video game store. Moving forward I suppose.

Indy CD & Vinyl didn't choose one of my submissions, but they're apparently just using it for stickers and stuff so they may use it later, as said to me by the clerk I always talk to there.

A classmate from a class just ending is interested in photos and a website. As soon as he calls me back, we can get the ball rolling. Hes a musician, so it should be interesting. I'll get to do some new stuff with music in a website.

Either way, pictures to come of the new stuff.

The Children's Museum called today saying they had two groups of interns starting up on May 11th and May 22nd. Because of some scheduling, I went with the 22nd. My first day with the Portraiture Studio people is May 5th. It's only 10hrs a week so far, but it's promising. I've already got people calling dibs on my spot at McVans haha...crazy kids have no clue what it's like to work in a game store. Oh well.

Ellison Spanish Pointers is an inactive project for a while. It would seem that the first puppies won't arrive till Fall.

It will be interesting to see how everything works out when I start up at Portraiture Studios, the Children's Museum, and try to keep some hours at McVans. I'm getting some business cards made. That'll be neat. I've had business cards before, but the guy who printed them was a madman and they turned out funky. The upside was that he was a kind madman and gave me them for free. It's time to get some real ones though.

It's not the most amazing thing in the world, but it was something I needed to have quick so I spent an hour and made something I could at least hand out to people. This print house in town seems pretty good too, so I'm looking forward to getting them back.

A good friend, Kelly Harris, asked about making a website sometime in the summer, but once I've got a possible project in my head, I can't help but work out some ideas. I came up with a few layouts, swatch sets, and a possible logo. It was sort of funny to hear my family argue over what they thought it was. One said it was an H, while another said it was a K. I was glad to hear that because it's actually both and I'm trying to find a way to balance the emphasis on each letter-form.

It'll transform quite a bit by the time it's done, but it was an idea I had to materialize before I could go to sleep.

All in all, things are good. Only two weeks left of class and I'm feeling the pressure as finals approach. While they're not particularly difficult courses, it's been a while since I've taken a standard test instead of making a project and presenting it to a group...frankly I like the project and presentation more.

Ahoy Matey!

www.ellisonspanishpointers.com is up and running. Now we just wait for the puppies to arrive. The internship is coming up soon and may coincide with a new full time job opportunity as a portrait photographer.

Recently I put together a couple of submissions for Indy CD & Vinyl's logo contest because I like the store a lot and there is the possibility of some compensation if chosen. The results aren't being announced until their 5th anniversary in late April though, so there is some waiting left before I find out if they picked my design.
They didn't take an incredible amount of time and they were fun to do since it's a little difficult to pinpoint exactly what their style is since they support such a wide variety of music there. The general consensus seems to be that the headphones circle is best.

Several photography opportunities have arisen. Varying between single portraits, family portraits, and a wedding. It would appear that plans to visit family and Tom & Kendall's wedding in July have fallen through though. Which is very sad, but I'll have to do something else to make it up.

Portraits from the Champaign-Urbana trip are up and I'm really happy with them. Lisa and Chad are great subjects and now that I've taken the time to look over the instruction manual to this fancy automatic camera, I'm getting some great things out of it.

Selling dogs, selling houses

I may possibly have more work making a website for someone trying to sell their house. What I need is some business cards. I tried having some made once at a Kinkos, but the guy there at 2am was some squirrelly, frazzle haired guy in there by himself ended up getting me some card stock that was too flimsy to perform as a business card. I guess I can't really complain since he gave them to me for free due to computer difficulties. He just reminded me of some crazy scientist guy coming out from his workshop of experiments and gadgets.

Oh well, I'll just have in investigate this further.

I got the internship with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis; which begins roughly one week after the spring semester ends. There are a few things I'd like to make time for. Luckily they seem to be pretty laid back people and I'll probably get to do most, if not all of them.

I'm looking to attend:
Bonnaroo (June 14th-17th)
Tom & Kendall's wedding (July 28th)
Lollapalooza (August 3th-5th)

I went to Lollapalooza last year and it sparked a love for these sorts of large festivals. The people who run and attend the festivals seem to be much more laid back than many other events I've been to. There were rumors of the Smashing Pumpkins performing at Lollapalooza this year. Being so close to their reunion and knowing their devotion to the city of Chicago, I'd be willing to put money on their attending.

Project wise, I've been working on a website for Ellison's Spanish Pointers, a friend's parent's dog breeding company. Wanting something simple and affordable, I refitted an old design for their needs with a great deal of success. I'm really liking the way it's coming out.

I've pushed through quite a bit of the grunt work in getting my portfolio site together. I'd bounced around a few designs and settled on one. It'll hopefully be up and running soon.

As usual, my Christmas Day Project and Keystone Archive Project are continuing through the year.

I've made this to catalog what I suppose could be called the design side of my life. Everything from personal career news to new projects. I hope to personalize this a bit and making something out of it.
